A Small Piece of Joy
Hello! My name is Louise Heming-Kershaw and I live in Milton Keynes in the UK.
I have always dreamed of being an artist in some form or other since I was little and I have always had art in my life in some form. After doing an art foundation course after school I specialised in photography and got a BTEC with merit. During this I had a summer job at Windsor Safari Park (now Legoland). Here I was asked to use my creative talents and was taught how to paint children’s faces which resulted in me creating my own business called ‘Facecraft’; face painting for children’s parties, corporate events and family fun days. I branched out into balloon modelling and children’s craft workshops. After a long time doing this, and wanting to spend more time with my family, I retired my business just before covid hit.
However, I still needed some kind of creative output, so my husband bought me a sewing machine and from there I taught myself to sew different things from various kinds of bags; totes, cosmetic bags and jewellery pouches.
I also taught myself to crochet and do macrame trying to find the one thing I enjoyed the most. However, I have now come to the conclusion that I don’t gravitate towards one craft in particular, I enjoy them all!
Recent changes in my life have led me to being in a position to transition from being just a hobbyist, and giving my makes away to family and friends as gifts, to making this my livelihood. I just want to make things and I want to share my ideas and creations with everyone to bring a small piece of joy into their lives.
The result of this is the creation of my new business ‘Heming K Creations’. I will be designing and making loads of products starting with my crochet flower bouquets, moving on to my hand sewn gift tags, macrame hoop decorations and onto a range of tote bags, purses, jewellery pouches and more.
Handcrafted and Original
All designed and made by hand in my happy place; at home in my craft room.
My first design is taken from my love of flowers; blossom in particular. I have always been influenced by Chinese and Japanese art and the wonderful floral patterns of William Morris. Two recent trips to the V&A and to the Flowers exhibition at the Sachi gallery in London have been the main inspiration for my crocheted flowers and stencil design. As I go through my journey I will be drawing on these influences but also trying to find sustainable ways of crafting as the natural world and the environment as a whole are also very important to me.
I hope you will join me in my crafting journey.
